Introduction

Alternative measures and dimensions enable users to explore data in a way that aligns with their natural thinking. They can swap or add new measures and dimensions directly in a visualization, instantly reframing the analysis without losing the context of surrounding charts. This flexibility turns dashboards into interactive data apps that surface new business questions and insights on the fly.

Setting Up Alternative Measures and Dimensions

Chart Settings

  • Alternate dimensions/measures:

Alternative measures and dimensions are enabled by default and can be disabled or enabled on a chart level using the setting at the bottom of the Data tab in the properties panel.

  • Enabling user interaction:

For users to select created alternative measures and dimensions in the visualisation, the Dimension & Measure Titles on the Axis need to be enabled and visible. This is done in the Axis tab of the properties panel.

  • Default visible dimensions & measures:
To set the default visible dimensions and measure when publishing a workbook, you need to ensure the switch is active, and for alternative dimensions and measures you do not want to display as default, but have available as an alternative option, the switch is inactive

Dimension Settings

  • Keep dimension fixed: For each dimension added to the visualization, you have the option to define it as a fixed dimension. When fixed, this dimension will always remain part of the visualization and won't appear in the list of alternative dimensions.

  • Measure Settings

Keep measure fixed: For each measure added to the visualization, you have the option to define it as a fixed measure. When fixed, this measure will always be part of the visualization and won't appear in the list of alternative measures.

Using Alternative Measures and Dimensions

Using the alternative measure and dimensions is simple, on the axis click on the axis label a menu is opened. Select the alternative measures or dimensions you want to see in the chart. Once you move your mouse pointer outside the menu area, the menu will close automatically.

Bookmarks:

User bookmarks will save the current state of the visible alternative dimensions & measures currently visible if the Visualization Sate is active:

Notes:

  • When selecting measures and dimensions, sometimes the selection will be added to the selected items and sometimes it'll replace the existing selected item. This is to maintain a valid chart configuration.

    • For example: if a bar chart has two dimensions, you won't be able to add a second measure and it will replace the existing measure.

  • Drill-through dimension: When opening the dimensions menu you might notice that some of the dimensions have a small arrow right to their name. This is because this is a drill-through dimension, clicking on the arrow will open the drill through menu to select the active dimension within the drill-through group.

Drive alternate measures & dimensions using variables & dropdowns

A new, fast approach to choosing dimensions, measures and columns, without relying on actions. Charts that share measures/dimensions can use a single dropdown.

How it works (simple)

  • Create a variable (e.g. Selected Measure)

    • We recommend creating another variable to list all options (e.g. All measures), to ensure users have an up-to-date list of all available options

  • Use Visibility conditions on measures or dimensions

  • Each item listens to the same variable value

  • Change the dropdown โ†’ charts update instantly

Known Limitations

  • The maximum of dimensions or measure you can set up as alternatives is 100 inclusive of the default visible.

  • Alternative measures and dimensions are available in main chart types and will be rolled out across all visualisations over time.
